Metastatic Breast Cancer Treatment: A Patient's Journey Toward Recovery and Improved Quality of Life

Eight months ago, Mrs. Tri Susilowati was advised by her treating physician to focus on prayer and spiritual preparation. She was informed that her breast cancer had progressed extensively, with widespread metastases including infiltration of the bone marrow. According to her oncology, the disease was so extensive that even the ultrasound probe could no longer adequately visualize the full extent of the tumour within the breast.

When Mrs. Tri was admitted to hospital, she was in a critically weakened condition. Her hemoglobin (Hb) level had fallen to 3.7 g/dL, while her platelet count had declined to only 20,000/µL. Despite undergoing multiple blood transfusions, her hemoglobin could not be restored to normal levels. Her daughter was devastated by the prognosis and tearfully pleaded, "Mom, please don't leave me."

A breast ultrasound performed in October 2025 demonstrated a breast mass measuring 9 × 8 cm. A subsequent CT scan revealed metastatic disease involving the spine, ribs, and pelvis. A bone marrow biopsy (BMP) confirmed metastatic carcinoma within the bone marrow with an immunohistochemical profile of ER-positive, PR-positive, and HER2-negative, consistent with a primary breast malignancy.

Bone marrow involvement significantly impaired normal blood cell production, resulting in persistent anemia despite repeated transfusions throughout September and October 2025. Even following transfusion, her hemoglobin level generally remained between 8–9 g/dL.

Given the diagnosis of Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, together with ongoing bone marrow failure and persistent anemia, treatment was limited to palliative and hospice care. Her oncologist prescribed endocrine (anti-hormonal) therapy and delivered 15 fractions of palliative radiotherapy to both the pelvis and chest to alleviate symptoms.

Unwilling to give up hope, Mrs. Tri's husband continued searching for additional treatment options and ultimately decided to incorporate ECCT therapy into her hospice care for her Metastatic Breast Cancer Treatment. Mrs. Tri commenced ECCT in late October 2025 while continuing her prescribed endocrine therapy.

According to the family, her clinical condition gradually stabilized following the initiation of ECCT. Her hemoglobin levels ceased declining, eliminating the need for further blood transfusions. She reported improved energy levels and overall physical well-being. The mass in her right breast became noticeably softer, breast retraction improved, and her symptoms, including cough, shortness of breath, and headaches, became less severe.

After six months of continuous ECCT use alongside her prescribed medical treatment, her overall condition had improved substantially. Her hemoglobin, platelet count, and white blood cell count had all returned to within relatively normal ranges.

The family reported that her bone marrow had resumed normal hematopoietic function, enabling adequate blood cell production without the need for further transfusions. They also observed that her right breast, which had previously become markedly deformed and collapsed as a result of the disease, had regained a near-normal appearance, with minimal residual deformity.

Today, Mrs. Tri has regained much of her independence and is able to carry out her daily activities and routine with significantly improved physical function and quality of life. Follow-up imaging has demonstrated a marked reduction in disease burden, with only minimal residual lesions remaining.

Her journey represents a remarkable improvement from a time when she was considered suitable only for palliative care. While she continues to be monitored and managed by her medical team, she and her family are deeply grateful for the progress she has experienced and for being able to enjoy a far more active and meaningful life.
